SMA designs and produces "Jet Fueled" piston engines for general aviation and aeronautical applications.

SMA, a 100% subsidiary of Snecma (Safran), develops, manufactures and sells a new generation of compression ignition engines, purposely-designed for aeronautical applications. SMA engines are specifically designed for single and multi-engine aircraft.

SMA supports OEMs for new applications, by offering specific versions of engines adapted to their application requirements, and providing technical assistance throughout integration and certification.

Reflecting a constant focus on innovation, SMA dedicates a large part of our resources to R&D. SMA is continually investing on the technologies needed to guarantee the future of its technology which offers derivative applications. SMA is a co-partner in leading R&D programs.

History

January 1997 Creation of SMA, a joint venture between Socata and Renault Sport F1
March 1998 First flight of the SR305-230 engine, installed on a TB-20 airframe.
February 2001 SMA obtains the JAR21 Design Organization Approval (DOA N°F.JA.08).
July 2002 SMA obtains FAA certification for the SR 305-230.
25 March 2005 Safran becomes 100% shareholder of SMA.
July 2005 First transatlantic flight of a single engine aircraft equipped with an SMA diesel engine.
March 2006 First non-stop flight of a single diesel engine aircraft over the Andes, from Buenos Aires to Santiago de Chile, by a single engine aircraft equipped with the SMA diesel engine.
December 2006 SMA becomes a subsidiary of Snecma.
September 2008 EASA Part 145 Repair Station certification.
July 2009 The SR305-230E Enhanced engine is introduced during EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI.
September 2009 First flight test of the SR305-230E engine up to 20,000 ft, on a TB-20 airframe.
November 2010 SMA is certified by Bureau Veritas : Certification in accordance with AS9100:2003 and ISO9001:2008 standards for the following activities : « Design, Production, Marketing and Maintenance of piston aviation engines and STC for light aircrafts »
January 24, 2011 Certification of the SR305-203E by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA)
April 2011 Certification of the SR305-203E by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration)
July 2012 Announcement at EAA Airventure Oshkosh of the selection of the SR305-230E by Cessna to power to new Turbo Skylane JT-A
